IGP Arase Endorses Stop-The-Bribes Website

The Nigeria Police Force has gone online in its determination to flush out corrupt police officers serving in various commands, nationwide as the  Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, last week endorsed a stop-the-bribes website.

The website:  www.stopthebribes.net, is where aggrieved persons across the country could log in to report cases of bribery, illegal arrest, unlawful detention, assault and illegal road blocks, among others.

Hosted by CLEEN Foundation in partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, Justice-4-All and the Canadian High Commission, the website is linked to facebook and other social media.

The website is known to have received some reports. For instance, an unknown person with telephone number 07061520632, reported that “some corrupt police officers attached to Owode Police Station in Ikorodu area of Lagos have been demanding bribes from students.

According to the person, the Police Area Commander, is allegedly looking the other way, as some corrupt police officers in the station allegedly collect money as bribes from the students.

Another person reported on May 23, 2015 that a team of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officers, without uniform and in an unmarked bus, invaded a building site at Nkwo Umunumo in Ehime – Mbano, Imo state.

According to the person, “a young security man, Obinna Ajugwogu, working at the site was allegedly shot by the officers at about 3.46pm on that day.

“To cover their act, the NDLEA men took this wounded victim and disappeared. No exhibit was collected from the scene. The entire people from the community went to various police stations without locating where they took the boy to,” the person said.
However, two days later, the NDLEA men after treating the boy in an undisclosed location dropped him in his house and disappeared without any comment.

Tunde Oluajo, a human rights activist based in Abuja reported that some police officers from Karu accosted him as he stepped out from a Club in Karu at about 11 pm and without any explanation, ordered him to enter their vehicle.
