Drink in moderation The good news is that within 24 hours, that same alcoholic beverage may protect against heart problems and stroke, the Harvard University researchers said. But, heavy drinkers don't seem to get those protective effects. "Heavy drinking increases risk both in the short term and the long term, but drinking smaller amounts has different effects in the subsequent hours than it does in the subsequent days and weeks," said lead researcher Elizabeth Mostofsky. She's an instructor at the Harvard School of Public Health and a postdoctoral fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston.

Violence may increase a woman's risk for stroke

  Being a victim of violence may increase a woman's risk of blood vessel disease and possibly stroke, a new study suggests. "Both society and the health care sector need to be aware of the importance of exposure to violence,  its impact and the risk of stroke, not only on social well-being, but also on women's long-term health," said study author Dr Mario Flores. He is a research assistant at the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico City.

Housewife bathes husband in boiling water over lack of sex

  An aggrieved housewife in Delta State has allegedly thrown boiling water over her husband, claiming that he has been denying her sex. According to a Punch report, the mother of six fled the family house shortly after the incident, claiming that her husband has been having affairs, while threatening to make his life unbearable. The victim, Frank Nwani, has refuted the claims, instead stating that his wife is the one sleeping around.

AMVCA 2016: Stephanie Okere dedicates award to Ese Oruru

  Film maker and actress Stephanie Linus, whose film won Best film in Africa at the African Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards(AMVCA) on Saturday, dedicated the award to Ese Oruru,  every child bride and vulnerable individual in Nigeria. The actress said this while collecting the award for Best Overall Movie(Africa) on stage with some members of her cast and crew. The story of the film, titled Dry is based on the infamous child-bride situation that is common in the Northern part of Nigeria.  14-year-old, Ese Oruru was in the news recently when she was kidnapped from Bayelsa and taken to Kano, in Northern Nigeria by 20- year old Yinusa, who impregnanted her and was about to marry her, before the Nigerian Police arrested him.

AMVCA 2016: Stephanie Linus Emerge best film in Africa

  It was a big night for Stephanie Linus at the AFrican Magic Movie Viewers Choice  Awards(AMVCA) held at the Eko Hotels on Saturday March 5, as Stephanie Linus's film 'Dry' took home the biggest prize of African film of the year. The film also won two other awards on the night for best costume design, and sound editing. Other big winners were film by South African based Nigeria, Akin Omotosho who won best director and best cinematography, and A Soldiers Story that also got two awards for best actor and best supporting actor.

Man beheads step-mother for rituals in Benue :( viewers discretion is advised)

  A wicked son who want to get rich quick, has taken the laws into his hands and behead his step mother for rituals in a Benue state community. What a wicked world we live in. A settlement in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, Obaganya, was gripped with tragedy during the weekend after a man identified as Echeno Adakole, beheaded his 50-year-old step-mother, Titi Enokela, for alleged ritual purposes.

Court orders ex president to account for recovered loot

  The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that his government, and the governments of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan account fully for all recovered loot. The court in a landmark judgement held that successive governments since the return of democracy in 1999 “breached the fundamental principles of transparency and accountability for failing to disclose details about the spending of recovered stolen public funds, including on a dedicated website.

  The call for the boycott of all banking services on Tuesday by the Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria (CAFON) against arbitrary charges by commercial banks witnessed little compliance by bank customers in Lagos. Buhari never promised job seeker's allowance - Presidency

  The Presidency on Monday stated that President Muhammadu Buhari did not promise a N5,000 monthly allowance to unemployed graduates. According to a statement released by Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, the provision that was made by the Federal Government in the 2016 budget to to pay a monthly allowance to extremely poor citizens in the country and not the unemployed. According to Akande, the provision of half a trillion naira had been made in line with social investment, which included an allowance for the poor.

  Thousands of customers are expected to boycott banking services on Tuesday (today)after the Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria (CAFON) urged Nigerians to protest against alleged arbitrary charges. According to Punch , CAFON declared March 1 a "No banking day".
