The Nigerian Communications Commission has stated that government is said to be considering the framework, to regulate the use of services in the Nigerian telecomms market.
The service is said to be known as Over The Top Service which is carried over networks and provides value to customers without collaborating with other service networks.
The OTT services are used in internet communication whereby most of these services are Whatsapp, BBM, Skype and Facebook.
An overview that was published by the Policy, Competition and Economic Analysis Department of the Nigerian Communications Commission where the outcomes of the report were that OTT services were becoming a threat to traditional telephone market operators.
Telecom operators such as MTN, Etisalat, Glo and Airtel do not have control over these social networks and they do not generate revenue in operating them according to reports.
Therefore the NCC feels the need for some kind of regulation because OTT services pose a security risks to the country.
