2016 has been interesting so far, thanks to celebrity beefs.
The year has been packed with a lot of drama especially in the
entertainment industry. Just when one issue is resolved, another one
pops up. Every controversy has been a hit, back to back.
The latest is the song-stealing drama. First it was Dammy Krane vs.
Wizkid, then former Plantashun Boy, Blackface came out with his own
accusation against Wizkid. He also came for his former band mate 2baba,
formerly Tuface, who has since expressed his surprise at the attack.
1. Timaya vs. Psquare
The singing twins are not exactly known for their originality. Since the start of their career in the early ’00s, one song after the other has been “inspired” by beats or lyrics created by other artists, mostly international stars. Timaya, who first came on the scene with his hit album, True Story, has since gone on to embrace Naija pop with all his might, with one song seamlessly running into the other. Still, we can agree that he is a bit more creative in masking his inspirations than the Okoye twins. In 2012, the I Concur singer accused PSquare of stealing the beats to his song Shake Your Bum Bum on their own hit Alingo. However, before the ‘controversy’ blew up much further some astute listeners were quick to point out that Timaya himself copied the beat from some foreign dancehall star.
2. Timi Dakolo vs. Darey Art Alade
When Darey released his single Pray For Me in 2015, some music lovers experienced a lot of deja vu. The song and lyrics sounded more than familiar and it was not hard finding out why. Timi Dakolo earlier in the year had released Wish Me Well, and there was marked similarities in both songs. Although, Darey insisted on the uniqueness of his song, music lovers were not fooled.
3. Dvee vs. Olamide
In 2015, Dbanj’s manager, Dvee, on Twitter, accused YBNL boss Olamide of stealing one of the Kokomaster’s unreleased song, Don’t Stop. The claim was backed up by Dbanj in an interview but he denied any animosity towards the Shakiti Bobo rapper. He said he won’t call what Olamide did theft rather, he would like to think of himself as a mentor who inspired other artists.

Just a few weeks back, Hypertek artist, Dammy Krane, went on a Twitter rant, accusing fellow artist Wizkid of stealing his song. The fight soon went off the internet too the club, where Wizkid allegedly smashed a bottle over Dammy Krane’s head. Luckily, several concerned celebrities stepped between the warring singers, cercing them into a truce.

Late nineties superstar and former Plantashun Boiz memeber, Blackface, is trying to revive his (dead) career. After they broke up in the early ’00s, Blackface, who reportedly wrote the group’s songs, he accused Wizkid of stealing one of his songs was slowly edged out of out of the limelight after he tried for a change of sound – from RnB to dancehall. Following years of silence on the music scene, he released a single, Killah, last week. In the song, . Later, in a series of tweets, he pointed out how Wizkid’s Ojuelegba was similar to a song on his album Ghetto Child.
6. Blackface vs. 2baba
Not satisfied with coming for Wizkid, Blackface in the same week went after his former best friend/band mate, 2baba,accusing of trying cheat him off songwriting rights for Let Somebody Love You . He also threatened court action. It wont be the first time Blackface is accusing his former friend of stealing from him. 2baba was reporteedly forced to pay Blackface royalties for the award winning hit African Queen; the song that started 2baba’s journey to legendary status. Reacting to the latest accusation, 2baba expressed his surprise at the public nature of the attack and wondered where it came from.
