Reports on Saturday indicated that dozens of army officers were sent packing on Friday in a move to rid the armed forces of corruption.
The senior officers were accused of corruption and the theft of billions of dollars meant to buy arms to fight the Boko Haram Islamic insurgency.
Some had already been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The Cable quoted Sani Usman, a colonel and army spokesperson as saying the compulsory retirement was based on "service exigencies".
"It should be recalled that not too long ago, some officers were investigated for being partisan during the 2015 general election.
"Similarly, the investigation by the presidential committee investigating defence contracts revealed a lot. Some officers have already been arraigned in court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC),"Usman was quoted as saying.
